In Office Procedures Q & A

When are in-office procedures necessary?

WomanKind OB/GYN, PA, offers comprehensive care for women’s health needs. Sometimes, during a well-woman exam, menopause management, preventive counseling, bone density screenings, or family planning, Dr. Daley may determine you could benefit from an in-office procedure.

An in-office procedure can also be recommended to treat specific symptoms, including:

  • Abnormal uterine bleeding
  • Pelvic pain
  • Abdominal distension and bloating

Diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as colposcopy, biopsies of the vulva, vagina and cervix, hysterosonogram, hysteroscopy, and cryotherapy are also procedures done in the office.

How is hormone replacement therapy administered in-office?

Hormone replacement therapy at WomanKind OBGYN, PA, is delivered as pellets inserted just under the skin. The in-office procedure is simple, quick, and involves very little discomfort.

Usually, Dr. Daley places the pellets in either hip, near the upper part of your buttocks. She applies a topical anesthetic and makes a small 3-4 millimeter incision in the skin. The pellets slip inside this incision, which Dr. Daley then bandages.

The incision heals quickly. You immediately start to absorb the hormones, with optimal benefits occurring within 30 days. The pellets dissolve over time and do not need removal. Dr. Daley can insert new pellets after 3-4 months for continued benefit.

What are bone densitometry exams?

A bone densitometry exam is a special type of X-ray that measures your bone mineral density. Performed in the office at WomanKind OB/GYN, PA, the scan is fast and painless but effective in detecting early weakening of your bones.

Usually, doctors recommend bone densitometry exams for women older than 65 who are at moderate risk of fracture.  Bone densitometry is also recommended for women with:

  • History of weakened bones
  • Vitamin D deficiency
  • Prolonged use of steroids
  • Prolonged use of certain contraceptives
  • Premature menopause

Younger women with these conditions may also be candidates for bone densitometry, as well as a family history of osteoporosis.
